Public Speaking: Have The Audience Write The Humor

Writing custom humor for groups is really tough. I remember the days when I was doing 85 percent humor in my speeches. The customized humor always took the most effort and carried the most risk. One way to beat the system is to have the audience write their own customized humor.

Who knows what's funny to them, better than them?

Break the audience into groups and give them some direction to start. You might ask them to come up with funny book titles based on people in their company (remind them to be kind because we don't want any hurt feelings).

You can give them some to start which will get the mood set and get you some laughs using stock humor before the exercise starts.

Book Titles:

"Secrets to a Happy Marriage" by Bill Clinton

"How to Raise Sober Kids" by George W. Bush

"Why I Hate Florida" by Al Gore

You could have them do Movie Titles, Work Project Titles, Newspaper Headlines, etc.

After they've been working on them for a while have them pick a spokesperson for the group who will recite to the entire audience their five best lines.

You can give out prizes and generally have a lot of fun with this technique.

Tom Antion: Video Marketing Tips

Web based video productions are usually short and informative. They can be produced to
drive traffic to your website or business and to welcome visitors to your website home
page. They can be made to offer customer service ideas, training for product use and
even to advertise specials, discounts and promotions. Due to the limited attention span
of Internet users and to limit the file size of videos for quick webpage loading, video
productions are best kept to 2 - 5 minutes. That's a lot of time however, to train on or
advertise a particular topic. The key to efficient video marketing is to produce many
small shorts based on keywords that a searcher will be looking for.

In the past few years there have been a large number of free hosting sites where you
can upload your videos for sharing. Sites such as Youtube, VideoGoogle, VideoYahoo,
Revver, Vimeo and DailyMotion let video makers of any size or professionalism to
create an account, called a channel, where you can upload and share an unlimited
number of videos that are easily searchable on search engines. In your account you can
build a subscriber list, brand your channel with logos and information about your business,
make friends and promote your videos by sharing them via email with other users.

Tom Antion: Costumes

No, you don't have to go on-stage in a gorilla suit, although you could if you wanted to. A costume can be anything from a flashy tie, to a feathered hat, to a full blown shiny Marca Polina outfit (the feminine Marco Polo) complete with an illuminated magic wand, that my friend Sally Walton wears when she talks about the magic art of "Communicating Across Cultures." Costumes add a flare and excitement to your presentations and certainly help to make them more memorable.

If you don't like to wear costumes, get the audience members to wear them. Better yet, get the "big shots" to wear them and you will probably be the hit of the meeting. I was doing a customer service talk for a pizza franchise and I had one of the senior managers march into the meeting wearing a filthy, doctor's lab coat with ketchup all over it (fake blood). I had another senior manager come in with a crisp, new lab coat. I asked a simple question, Which manager would you like operating on you? Of course, all the junior managers yelled out that they wouldn't let either one of these people operate on them. Everyone was laughing and joking around, but the point was made. They must keep their employees looking clean and neat because nice customers won't want to be served by grungy food service workers.

Costume characters can be hired to hand out fliers at your event, entertain, and generally create an air of fun and excitement. The local heart association has a "blood drop" costume they use when they are soliciting funds. There are literally hundreds of costumes available through costume shops or via mail order. Just make sure, as always, the theme of the costume matches the theme of your presentation or event.

Tom Antion: Ladies On TV

by guest Karen Puckett

At one of my former places of employment, part of the new employee orientation was sitting through several hours of a customer service presentation on video tape. In addition to being a painfully unanimated speaker, the presenter wore a suit with the biggest, loudest scarf around her neck and over her shoulder. All of us poor souls in the room watching were left with no recollection of the content of the presentation, but a indelible image of the infamous scarf!

As you know, not only should the length of a speech be appropriate for the audience, but the speaker should make sure that their appearance is not distracting.
